WOODWAY Builds Treadmill For Space Station

Waukesha, WI – April 17, 2009 — At the heart of the space station’s now famously named COLBERT (Combined Operational Load Bearing External Resistance Treadmill) is a WOODWAY Treadmill that was designed and manufactured at WOODWAY’s world headquarters in Waukesha, WI.

There are nearly 800 parts to the COLBERT, and the most important one is the treadmill,” states Doug Bayerlein – WOODWAY President. “WOODWAY treadmills have long been known as the world’s finest treadmill. Now that there will be a WOODWAY in space, we may be known as the finest treadmill in the galaxy.”

WOODWAY treadmills were selected due to their sustainability and reliability. WOODWAY’s patented design allows its treadmills to last longer than any other treadmill while consuming significantly less electricity.

“The treadmill used for the space station is, in principle, the same design being used by professional sports teams, commercial fitness facilities and medical rehabilitation centers around the world,” explains Eric Weber – WOODWAY Director of Sales and Marketing. “Our patented design sets us apart from conventional treadmills; in fact one of the requirements for the space station treadmill was that it needed to last 150,000 miles without a single belt change.”

The COLBERT is scheduled to be flown to the International Space Station later this year. The COLBERT is a critical countermeasure device required to maintain crew health while on-orbit and prepare them for return to Earth.
